For many people who are not satisfied with the shape of their face, the problem often lies with their jawline
When a muscle known as the masseter (a chewing muscle) is large or overly well-developed, the result can be a square, very masculine-looking jawline. At one time, jaw reduction surgery was the only option for patients wishing to give their face a more oval or heart shape. This was painful, had a long recovery time, and did not always produce natural-looking results. Today, however, a more delicate jawline may be achieved with a simple and relatively painless procedure known as masseter Botox (or masseter reduction Botox).
Botox is the brand name for a purified protein that is manufactured by the pharmaceutical company, Allergan
WHAT EXACTLY IS BOTOX AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
It is made using the same bacteria that is used to treat migraines and muscle spasms and is absolutely safe when administered by an experienced doctor at the proper dosages. It works by blocking the activity of the nerves and relaxing the muscles, and it is used for a wide range of medical procedures – not just cosmetic ones. With Masseter Botox, the injection works by relaxing the muscle and weakening it over time. This decreases its size and eventually results in a smaller jawline and a narrower-looking face. Results become noticeable after only a few weeks. For optimal results, Dr. Torgerson usually recommends 3 treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart.
WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR THIS PROCEDURE?
Most healthy adults with large masseter muscles are good candidates for this procedure. It is particularly popular, however, with Asian females, many of whom naturally have broad jawlines.
Sometimes people who regularly chew gum or eat tough foods also have a well-developed masseter.
Those with dental or skin infections should wait until they are healed before receiving Botox, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should also wait.
If you think you might benefit from masseter Botox, book a consultation with Dr. Torgerson so that he can confirm that you are a good candidate
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM THIS TREATMENT?
One of the most popular types of dermal filler contains a synthetic form of HA (hyaluronic acid), which naturally occurs in our own soft connective tissue. This gel-like substance, injected with tiny needles, fills in lines and wrinkles, adding moisture and lubrication as well. Popular products used by Dr. Torgerson in his Toronto office include Restylane, Perlane, Teosyal Global, Teosyal Ultimate, Juvederm, Voluma Lift, and Redensity II. Continual improvements have been made in recent years to the durability of injectable filler products, which in turn produce longer-lasting results. Injectable fillers are completely safe to use due to their ability to be naturally absorbed into the skin and metabolized by our bodies. Dermal Fillers can be injected to add volume to the nasalabial area between the nose and mouth, chin, and sagging cheeks, as well as lips, temples, and nose.
Several companies manufacture a quality filler, and Dr. Torgerson can help clients choose the correct dermal filler product to use, depending on which area of the face is being augmented.
Both Botox and fillers are the same in that they are less intrusive than plastic surgery with virtually no downtime. In less than a half-hour, dermal fillers produce immediate and long-lasting results, and Botox takes effect within 4 to 6 days. Botox and fillers are increasingly popular because the aesthetic improvements can be achieved in a very cost-effective manner.
