Eyelid surgery, called blepharoplasty, is done to alter the shape of the eyelids, either above or beneath the eye itself.
Asian double eyelid surgery has become a popular phenomenon in recent years amongst men and women alike who are seeking to change the shape of their upper eyelids. This procedure differs from Caucasian and other ethnic blepharoplasties because of the natural structure of many Asian people’s eyes. Further, many people have unsatisfactory first attempts at Asian blepharoplasty and require revision surgery. In these cases, the pre-op eye shape is significantly different than the post-op shape.
Special Considerations For Asian Eyes
The main difference between Asian eyelid shapes and others is the folds on the upper lid. Many Asian people do not have a crease; this is called a single eyelid.
Some Asian people have partial creases or inconsistent creases, and some have multiple creases. Most Caucasian people have the double fold naturally. Also, often Asian eyelids start very close to the lash line and the nose, which creates a hooded feature that does not allow the eye to open very widely. In certain instances, this hooded-ness (especially on ageing patients whose skin is beginning to sag) can be mistaken for tiredness. Asian double eyelid surgery opens up the inner eye by removing the inner skin and creating a shape more similar to the common Caucasian eye.
Some Asian blepharoplasty patients find their eyes are asymmetrical. One eye may have some of a crease while the other does not. Having this surgery can ensure that the eyes are evenly matched to each other. Some people find their eyelids look puffy or like they are bulging, either on the top or the bottom or both. Undergoing eyelid surgery can resolve these issues as well by creating the desired look and removing any excess, unwanted skin.
Some older Asian blepharoplasty patients will want to combine the double eyelid surgery with a rejuvenating surgery to renew the look of younger eyes all in one procedure. Younger patients may only be looking to create the double-fold. Some Asian people seeking blepharoplasties will not be seeking the Asian double eyelid surgery, but rather just a rejuvenating blepharoplasty on its own. Every patient is offered individual consultation and the opportunity to achieve the results they want.
Many people desire the double-folded look. Women who want to wear eye shadow and eye liner especially like the look of the double folded eyelids. It creates a more open look that is often desired by Asian blepharoplasty patients.
Two common surgical approaches
There are two common methods for double-fold surgery, the first being the partial incision technique.
In this method, the facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Torgerson, will make a one-centimetre incision on the upper lid where the crease will be created. This incision is considered minimal and allows for the double-fold to be created. The other method is the suture technique, which does not require an incision at all. Instead, the double fold is created using sutures. This technique is not necessary, however, as the eyes can revert back to their natural shape over time.
The procedure is quick and requires very little recovery time. As with any facial surgery, there can be some bruising and swelling, but most blepharoplasty cosmetic surgery can be done with minimal scarring. The aim is to create a natural-looking, double-folded eyelid.
