Eyelid Surgery

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is one of the most popular Facial Plastic Surgery procedures performed worldwide.

The purpose of eyelid surgery is to restore a more youthful look to the eyes. The procedure can correct wrinkles, reduce puffy bags, and lighten heavy lids – working to literally open the eyes of the patient – producing a rested and rejuvenated appearance. Patients can choose a full blepharoplasty (which is eyelid surgery on both the upper eyelids and the lower eyelids) or they can choose to simply have an upper eyelid blepharoplasty or a lower eyelid blepharoplasty performed.

Although eyelid surgery is mainly known as a facial rejuvenation procedure, blepharoplasty can also have benefits beyond a pleasing aesthetic result. This surgery can also be performed for functional reasons such as drooping eyelids causing an impairment in vision.

Candidates For Blepharoplasty

It is said that when people look at another’s face, the first feature that is noticed is their eyes. This is also the same area where people will often first begin to see the signs of aging on their own face. The natural process of aging and factors such as heredity or physical exhaustion begin to cause changes to the eyes that can make a person look older and tired. Heavily wrinkled skin around the eye, puffy bags underneath the eye, excess loose skin above the eye, and fine lines and wrinkles are all elements that would indicate that eyelid surgery may be a great solution for any patient. Dr. Torgerson’s office offers free consultations in which patients can privately discuss the options with the surgeon and develop a personalized plan of action.

How Is Eyelid Surgery Performed?

Conscious Sedation Techniques

Dr. Torgerson performs eyelid surgery using conscious sedation. This is a safer method than using general anaesthetic, as the eyes are delicate and Dr. Torgerson wants to ensure that the perfect amount of skin and tissue is taken from around the eyes. In an upper blepharoplasty, the surgeon creates tiny incisions and through them conservatively removes skin from around the upper eyelid along with a small amount of fat. This fat accumulation is what causes the bulging appearance that patients dislike. By removing it, Dr. Torgerson can create a youthful, contoured result and open-eyed natural look.

The Facial Plastic Surgeon will also tighten the outer part of the eye before closing the incisions with very fine sutures. There are more variations in the procedure for the lower eyelid: in the transconjunctival approach, the surgeon removes fat via a small incision made in the inside lining of the eye. This is a fantastic approach, since it leaves no visible scarring. The alternative cosmetic surgery method is the subciliary approach, where the fat is removed by making a tiny incision just underneath the eyelashes. Once this heals, this incision becomes invisible. Either method will result in the disappearance of the fat pad bulge below the eye and a nice, smooth contour in its place. The complete eyelid surgery can take between 2 and 3 hours if both the upper and lower blepharoplasty are being performed at the same time.

What To Expect After Blepharoplasty

Following eyelid surgery, patients will be allowed to go home on the same day under the care of a family member or a friend. A prescription for antibiotics to combat any possible infection and pain medication to ensure comfort will have been prescribed previously. Dr. Torgerson also provides his post-operative patients with his direct cell phone number so that they can connect with him at any time of day or night. Patients generally opt to take 1 week off of their daily schedule. The patient will return to the Facial Cosmetic Clinic on Day 5 to have the stitches removed. Most patients use cold compresses throughout the healing process and find that the majority of the swelling and bruising comes down within 1 week. Over the remaining weeks, the eyelid surgery scars will continue to lighten and heal and, for most patients, will become almost imperceptible.

Top Blepharoplasty Questions Asked By Patients

At what age is blepharoplasty performed?

Although there is no standard age, most patients who seek out blepharoplasty are 35 years of age and older. This is generally because signs of aging and genetics begin to really show around this time, and people usually want to address those signs sooner rather than later.

Will a blepharoplasty get rid of all of my eye wrinkles?

A blepharoplasty is not designed to address the crow’s-feet around the outer edges of the eyes. A blepharoplasty will really target the lower bags (excess skin and fat) below the eye or the excess skin above the eye. Some other excellent non-surgical options to help soften wrinkles around the eye is the use of Botox and laser treatments.

Does Dr. Torgerson have experience with Asian Blepharoplasty?

The answer is a resounding yes! Due to Toronto’s multicultural population, Asian Blepharoplasty procedures are common in Dr. Torgerson’s practice. Dr. Torgerson is also an expert specializing specifically in Facial Plastic Head and Neck Surgery. This means that blepharoplasty surgery and Asian blepharoplasty make up a large component of his regular operating schedule.

What are the expected side effects of Blepharoplasty during the healing process?

Patients should expect blurred vision after surgery. However, this will improve following surgery. There may be mild to moderate discomfort (for which pain medication will be prescribed), swelling, redness and itching, and a feeling of tightness. Any surgical incision causes a scar. This will be minimized under Dr. Torgerson’s care, and the appearance of the scar will gradually fade over time.

What medical tests are required before having Eyelid Surgery?

Dr. Torgerson takes extra measures and precautions to ensure that all of his patients are fit for surgery. His Toronto clinic requires blood tests, a chest x-ray, and an eye exam prior to Blepharoplasty surgery. Dr. Torgerson will make recommendations on how and where to easily take these tests if you are unsure.

Where will my blepharoplasty surgery be performed?

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is performed by Dr. Torgerson right in his own State-of-the-Art-Surgical facility. Because of its private nature, people can expect a higher level and quality of care from the handpicked medical staff and can rest assured that their surgical case will not get bumped from the operating schedule, as is routinely the case at hospitals throughout Ontario. Furthermore, Dr. Torgerson’s Toronto Surgery centre always strives to exceed provincial expectations during the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario regular quality assurance inspections and is one of a handful of fully-approved Level 3 surgical facilities in Ontario. The College of Physician and Surgeons of Ontario is responsible for mandates regarding Private surgical centres, as well as inspection reports that assess and approve the facility. Cost Of Eyelid Surgery In Toronto

A top consideration for most cosmetic patients when they are thinking about cosmetic improvements is the cost of eyelid surgery in Toronto. Generally speaking, the cost of blepharoplasty ranges between $4000 – $8000 plus applicable taxes. These prices are an average guideline and are subject to fluctuate in time. The cost changes per patient based on if the patient is choosing to have both their upper and lower eyelids operated on, or if they are simply targeting their upper eyelids, or strictly their lower eye bags. We know that budgeting and planning for any plastic surgery procedure is important to most of our clients, so our Toronto Facial Cosmetic Surgery Centre is pleased to offer financing options to all our patients through two credible companies: Credit Medical and Medicard. Just by visiting their websites, anyone can apply quickly and easily; patients will often receive an answer in less than 24 hours.

Eyelid Surgery

Some patient are interested to know why there can be differences in pricing between surgery clinics. Factors that can affect blepharoplasty cost are a) the experience of the surgeon b) the location of the facility c) if it is being performed in a public hospital or a private hospital setting and d) the reputation of the surgeon and the plastic surgery center. When patients receive a personalized quote after their free consultation with the surgeon, that quote is the full cost with no hidden fees or extra costs later added on. The quoted cost of eyelid surgery at our Toronto centre includes the surgeon’s fees, all pre-operative and post-operative appointments up to one year following surgery, the facility expense, the anaesthesiologist and medical team costs. Anything beyond the quoted cost would be only for medication afterwards (prescribed pain killers and antibiotics) or anything solely at the patients discretion, such as natural supplements to help reduce swelling and bruising.

Ethnic Blepharoplasty

Although Eyelid Surgery is fundamentally the same procedure regardless of ethnicity, Double Eyelid Surgery (also known as Asian Blepharoplasty) is a popular facial cosmetic procedure. This variation of Upper Blepharoplasty creates a natural fold on the upper eyelid that did not previously exist, and the scars are hidden within this crease.

Because Toronto is one of the most multi-ethnic cities in the world, Dr. Torgerson’s patients come from all cultural backgrounds. During the free consultation, patients can see the before and after photos of other Blepharoplasty patients who have given permission for their images to be shown in the office.
