Lower Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
One of the most noticeable signs of aging that a person can exhibit is changes around the eye area – in particular, sagging skin under their lower eyelid.
Wrinkles, bags, and dark circles under the eyes can make you look older than you really are, not to mention they give you the appearance that you are always tired.
Lower eyelid surgery (also known as lower blepharoplasty) can correct the sagging skin, fatty bags, and dark circles around the eyes, improving the shape of the lower eye by removing excess skin. Blepharoplasty is one of the most common and popular cosmetic surgeries because of how easy it can be and what a huge difference in your appearance it can make.
HOW IS LOWER EYELID SURGERY PERFORMED?
Lower eyelid surgery (lower blepharoplasty) involves making an incision right under the lash line or inside the eyelid.
These two different procedures are known as external or internal, depending on where the incision is made. After the incision is made, fat is carefully removed from areas that have a bulging appearance. The entire surgery takes approximately 1 to 2 hours.
AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR THE SURGERY?
If you are a healthy man or woman with concerns about the skin around your lower eyelids, then chances are you will be a good candidate for this procedure. Dr. Torgerson will confirm this with you during your free consultation, which can be booked at his Toronto location. Conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or thyroid problems may increase the risk in such surgeries.
What to expect during the procedure?
The surgery is performed under conscious sedation anaesthesia. This is the best way so that the blepharoplasty can be done properly and the correct amount of skin and tissue can be taken. The pain afterwards is minimal, although Dr. Torgerson will prescribe antibiotics and a painkiller to help aid the recovery process.
after the procedure
Just like any other surgery, there is going to be a period of healing during which you should rest and refrain from strenuous activity. During this time you may experience:
Mild swelling for around 7 days; in some cases, it may last for a few weeks
Some feeling of excess eye dryness due to surgery
Some swelling and bruising, which usually last for about a week
Patients may notice some sensitivity to light
Stitches are usually removed 5 days later. While other complications (like impaired functioning of the eyelid or loss of sensation) are possible, they are extremely rare. When the procedure is performed by an experienced and skilled facial plastic surgeon such as Dr. Cory Torgerson, these risks are reduced even further.
