Reshape & Contour

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is also commonly known as nose surgery or a nose job.

It involves the surgical reshaping of the nose so that the outward appearance and form of the nose is changed, *and often the function and structure in the nose is also transformed.* The remodelling of the nose through rhinoplasty is one of the most common and rewarding cosmetic surgery procedures performed today. The procedure can be tremendously gratifying for both the patient and surgeon. Due to its popularity, patients who choose to undergo Nose Surgery typically range in age from late teens to upwards of 60. The end result should be a nose that is proportionate, balanced and functional.

Rhinoplasty Education

The Nose Is One Of Our Most Prominent Features

Candidates For Nose Surgery

There are several reasons behind a patient’s motivation to seek cosmetic surgery of their nose. The nose is one of our most prominent features and can be a distinguishing characteristic of the face. Motivation to seek out a qualified Facial Plastic Surgeon to perform a nose job can stem from heredity to physical trauma and even prior attempts at corrective surgery. Common areas of concern for patients are a bulbous tip, droopy tip, or a boxy tip. Many patients also are seeking to have a bump (dorsal hump) on their nose refined and improve their nasal profile. Changes can also be made to decrease or widen the size of the nostrils or change the rotation (angle) of the tip. Modifying the width of the bridge of the nose is also popular with rhinoplasty patients.

However, external features of the nose are not the only reasons patients seek a change. Some rhinoplasty patients also have difficulty with breathing and nasal functionality (for example, chronic nasal congestion). In many cases, improving the nasal passages is a relatively straightforward procedure and will require only a straightening of the nasal septum and turbinate reduction. This can be done through a procedure called a septoplasty and can be performed at the same time as a rhinoplasty. Patients will often notice a welcome and dramatic change in their breathing in addition to their polished external appearance.

How Is Rhinoplasty Surgery Performed?

The Procedure Takes From One To Three Hours

Rhinoplasty surgery is mainly carried out under general anaesthesia, although in certain cases, it may be performed with local anaesthetics and IV sedation. The procedure takes from one to three hours to complete – depending upon the complexity of the case. Because patients desire and deserve to be given the opportunity for the best results, Dr. Torgerson’s approach to Rhinoplasty is primarily through the closed method. This means that the nasal surgery is performed through incisions made inside the nose. Dr. Torgerson feels that not only does this method result in higher patient satisfaction, but allows him, as the surgeon, to perform the rhinoplasty with much greater precision and care. Another approach that can be performed is the open method. Here, greater exposure to the nose can be achieved by “opening” the skin overlying the nose using a small “inverted V” incision in the skin between the nostrils. During both closed or open rhinoplasty surgery, Dr. Torgerson will sculpt the cartilage, bone, and soft tissue (skin, muscle, and fat) of the nose to create the desired outcome.

What Can A Patient Expect During Nose Surgery Recovery?

Dr. Torgerson’s office will walk with you through each stage of the procedure from pre-operative preparation to post-surgical recovery. Following surgery, Dr. Torgerson even provides patients with his personal cell phone number so that they can call or text him 24/7 with anything they may need or have questions about. During the rhinoplasty recovery phase, patients are advised to take a minimum of one week off of work. For the first week, patients may experience stuffiness, a bit of bleeding, bruising and swelling. However, pain medication is prescribed, *and most patients find the recovery comfortable and very tolerable.* The cast is removed one week following surgery. Most patients will find that the majority of their swelling and bruising goes down within 10-14 days. However, subtle changes and definition of the nose continue to develop over the next several months as the nose heals and settles.

What Happens During A Rhinoplasty Consultation?

Potential rhinoplasty patients will have the opportunity to meet privately with Dr. Torgerson. During this initial consultation, patients will be able to express their concerns and ask questions. Dr. Torgerson will carefully examine and analyze their nose and provide a comprehensive plan of action. One of the tools that can be incorporated into your consultation is the VECTRA 3D imaging camera (live Link to Page). This technology allows Dr. Torgerson and the patient to realistically design a natural and proportionate nose. The use of the 3D imaging also ensures that the patient’s expectations are achievable and aligns the patient’s goals with Dr. Torgerson’s surgical plan.

Viewing before and after photos of previous Rhinoplasty patients are an important part of the consultation process. At Dr. Torgerson’s office, you will have the opportunity to see additional before and after patient images. Not everyone is comfortable with allowing their photos to go online; however, many patients are comfortable with their results being viewed in office and have given permission for them to be used. This is another way of seeing Dr. Torgerson’s expertise and skill tangibly in actual patient results.

Top Rhinoplasty Questions Asked By Patients

How do I select the best rhinoplasty surgeon?

Cosmetic rhinoplasty is a very challenging and demanding surgery. Although there may be many surgeons who offer rhinoplasty procedures, Facial Plastic Surgeons and Ear, Nose, and Throat (E.N.T) Surgeons perform an overwhelming majority of nose surgeries. Dr. Torgerson is one of the top rhinoplasty experts in Canada, as he is both an ENT surgeon and a Facial Cosmetic Surgeon, having achieved his credentials in both surgical specialties. Choosing a Facial Plastic Surgeon who is highly trained and experienced in rhinoplasty is the number one consideration. Following this, patients should also consider their personal rapport and comfort level with the surgeon, approved operating room facilities, the reputation of the surgical facility, the before and after photos of previous patients, and no malpractice claims.

What is the difference between closed rhinoplasty and open rhinoplasty?

Closed rhinoplasty refers to when the nose surgery is performed so that all the surgical incisions are hidden within the nostrils. Open rhinoplasty has the cosmetic surgeon approaching the surgery by creating an incision at the bottom of the columella (in between the nostrils) and performing the rhinoplasty by opening up this area. With Dr. Torgerson, each patient’s needs will be assessed and the best approach taken to achieve the desired result.

Does having thick skin or thin skin impact the rhinoplasty result?

*Yes, the type of skin a patient has can affect a rhinoplasty result. Patients with thicker skin may have a more difficult time achieving the definition they desire in the tip of the nose, whereas patients with very thin skin may find that underlying small imperfections on the nose are easier to detect after surgery. In both cases, choosing an expert rhinoplasty doctor is of outmost importance in order to have the surgical goals realized.*

How old should a patient be before undergoing rhinoplasty surgery?

*Dr. Torgerson recommends that a patient be older than 16 years of age before having rhinoplasty surgery. By 16 years old, the nasal growth should be complete. However, the emotional maturity and stability of the teenager must also be looked at. Anyone under the age of 18 would need a parent or guardian to consent to their surgery.*

Does Dr. Torgerson perform Rhinoplasty in a private Plastic Surgery facility or a hospital?

There are many factors to consider with rhinoplasty – and one of the important ones is where the surgery will take place! Dr. Torgerson operates on all of his patients within his own state-of-the-art approved surgery centre. Ontario has strict guidelines for out-of-hospital premises and governs any private surgical facilities through the College of Physician and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). Dr. Torgerson’s surgery centre is one of the few fully-approved Level 3 facilities in all of Toronto and has received an outstanding assessment and inspection. Level 3 is the highest level a private surgery centre can achieve, meaning it is approved for full use of general anaesthesia. One of the benefits of a private plastic surgery centre versus a hospital is that patients will have focused one-on-one nursing care. A hospital cannot provide this and cannot guarantee who will be taking care of you pr- and post- surgery. At Dr. Torgerson’s, the staff is experienced and has the highest training. A private centre also offers the assurance that your surgery will not get cancelled because of another more important surgical case. This can often happen when booking surgery with a plastic surgeon operating mainly from a hospital. Lastly, in a private cosmetic surgery clinic, rhinoplasty can be scheduled according to what is suitable for the patient’s schedule and not according to when a hospital has availability. The paragraph below includes a statement issued by the CPSO regarding their inspection of Dr. Torgerson’s Private Surgical Centre:

Potential Side Effects

Did You Know?

There are several types of rhinoplasty: Alar base Reduction, Broken nose, Deviated or Crooked Nose, Ethnic Rhinoplasty, Finesse Rhinoplasty, Revision Rhinoplasty, Saddle Nose Deformity, Septoplasty, and more!

The approach towards each of these variations is particular, and that’s why it’s important for potential rhinoplasty patients to seek out an expert with specific education and training in performing Nose Surgery.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Ethnic Rhinoplasty Is An Elite Speciality

Ethnic rhinoplasty is an elite speciality where the surgeon must carefully work with the patient’s facial features and ethnicity to create the most natural and authentic result. Ethnic rhinoplasty patients do not want to change their racial identity. They are generally looking for a more refined version of their nose.

Dr. Torgerson has operated and worked extensively with many cultures and people groups, having the benefit of a surgery centre located in Toronto, one of the most multicultural cities in the world. Therefore, Dr. Torgerson has wide-ranging experience with Asian Rhinoplasty, African-American Rhinoplasty, Persian Rhinoplasty, and many more.

This kind of understanding and exposure to diversity is paramount in Rhinoplasty Surgery in order to achieve the best results that perfectly suit the individual.

What Is The Price Of Rhinoplasty In Toronto?

The cost of rhinoplasty in Toronto is an legitimate question and should be considered carefully. Typically the rhinoplasty cost will be dependent upon the qualifications of the facial plastic surgeon, the extent of the surgical rhinoplasty needed, as well as the urban location. Well-populated locales will likely be more expensive, but also have more experienced and qualified nose reshaping surgeons.

Other factors will also directly impact the cost of rhinoplasty. Some of the upfront costs that will be included in the pricing at Dr. Torgerson’s Toronto Plastic Surgery Centre are anaesthesia fees, nurses’ fees, use of the facility on the day, which includes medications and all surgical supplies. The quoted rhinoplasty price also includes all appointments with the facial plastic surgeon, including pre-operative consent signing appointments and post-operative follow up appointments for 1 year post-surgery. Other out-of-pocket costs may be necessary prescription drugs, such as antibiotics or pain killers if there is no coverage provided through an insurance drug plan. Overnight nursing also would incur additional expenses, but most rhinoplasty patients do not opt for this, as they are well enough to return home on the same day of their nose reshaping surgery and have a family member care for them as they rest and recover.

Typically, as of 2015, the cost of rhinoplasty in Toronto is between $5,000 and $10,000, depending on the surgeon and surgery centre you choose. These prices are subejct to change over time. Payment and finance plans are available to help alleviate the immediate cost of the nose surgery and make the rhinoplasty price less prohibitive. It’s important to ask what is included in the rhinoplasty cost as some surgery centres will quote only for the facial plastic surgeon’s fee, adding on the cost of anaesthesia and the facility usage later on. Being fully informed about the nose job cost and it’s inclusions and exclusions will help you determine if the pricing is right for you.

Rhinoplasty Alternatives

For those patients unwilling to go through with rhinoplasty, or looking for other non-invasive nose job alternatives and treatment plans, the non-surgical nose job with dermal filler may be the perfect option. This type of nose job cost usually ranges from $700- $900 for one syringe depending on the expertise of the injector and the type of filler used. The dermal filler can be used to augment the nose, masking a bump or contouring the bridge. This increasingly popular option is low-risk and can be fully completed within 15 minutes. The dermal filler used for nose reshaping usually lasts around 9 months and can provide top results if you are the right type of candidate for this procedure.
