Dark Under Eye Circles

When people say that they have dark circles under their eyes, they are often referring to hollows, darker skin pigment, or puffiness and eye bags that cast shadows. This problem is sometimes nicknamed, “raccoon eyes” and refers to dark skin blemishes or skin discoloration underneath the eyes that can give people a tired and aged appearance. People often believe that a good night’s rest will eliminate their problem, but it could be more complex than that.

Dark Circles

Dark circles most commonly appear in adulthood, though children can have them as well. The bluish hue is most noticeable around the eyes of fair skinned people, and where there is thin skin and very little fat. The under-eye area tends to have the thinnest skin on the face. This area is also extremely sensitive, and capillaries beneath the surface are prone to breaking because of stress or sun damage. Oxidized blood cells in this area will form dark purple hues that are visible under the surface. Dark under eye rings can also be a sign of iron deficiency. When people are anemic they have insufficient iron in their systems and the hemoglobin, which carries oxygen to the cells, can be broken down easily which also leads to a bruised appearance under the thin skin of the lower lids. Fatigue is often the culprit, causing what only appear to be dark circles under the eyes but are actually shadows cast by eyebags or hollows.

Tired or aging eye muscles are lax, and therefore puffiness or eye bags appear more pronounced when we are sleep deprived. The small muscles which act as a girdle, holding in fat and pressing it smooth under the eye, are prone to stretching out. Being tired or under stress will also make the complexion appear paler, so that dark circles look more pronounced. Fatigue is one of the most common causes of dark under eye circles.

Unfortunately, aging brings with it a loss of fat, collagen and muscle tone around the eyes. Eyes can appear sunken with just minimal fat loss. Thinning skin and loss of skin hydration and thickness can lead to a blue or purple under eye shade. Allergies may also lead to puffy looking or irritated eyes.

Causes of Dark Under Eye Circles

Darker African and Asian skin tones also tend toward hyperpigmentation issues in the thin under eye skin. In these cases, the skin becomes darkened more than the rest of the skin on the face. Sun exposure will increase pigment deposits and sun spots on the skin and around the delicate eye area as well.

Various medical conditions such as liver diseases, asthma, eczema, anemia, dehydration, and malnutrition, trauma and bruising or damage to the tissues and capillaries under the eyes, will cause a darker appearance. Health related issues such as alcohol consumption, smoking, stress and insomnia may also lead to the appearance of dark under eye circles. Heredity is a factor for the development of dark under eye circles. The condition tends to run in families who share common genetic features. Some people have a hereditary tendency to dark under eye circles, no matter how well-rested they are.

Certain medications are also a consideration when diagnosing your dark under eye circles. Talk to your primary care doctor if you notice sudden changes or side effects related to a medication that you are taking, or if your under-eye discoloration and swelling appear to get worse over time or only appear on one side.

What can I expect during and after the treatment?

Topical creams and home remedies which are designed to get rid of dark under eye circles are widely available, however, positive effects depend largely on the origin for the issue and underlying health. Plenty of available products can moisturize and soothe the area but cannot significantly change the appearance of dark circles, because of the deep structural layers that factor into their formation. Many people have found that aside from being ineffective, these products can actually make the problem appear worse.

If you have not yet found a solution for your “raccoon eye” problem, we invite you to consider effective dermatological methods; such as, photo rejuvenation, IPL , PRP or fractional laser resurfacing.
