Laser Hair Removal
Many begin the daily and time consuming routine of body hair removal shortly after body and facial hair begin to grow. Costs for these methods can accumulate, as well as the stress and daily inconvenience of painful treatments and irritated skin, that may lead to other skin issues such as ingrown hairs.
In addition to the aesthetic concerns, a dramatic change in body hair growth patterns may also indicate the presence of an underlying medical condition. It is important to talk with your primary care physician if you have noticed a sudden, unexplained and dramatic change in hair growth on your body or face.
Common methods of at-home hair removal, such as shaving, plucking, electronic or radiofrequency tweezers, waxing, threading, and depilatories (creams) are temporary – and no longer necessary, as medical and scientific advances have now made laser hair removal a safe and permanent solution. Lasers offer the only method for permanent hair reduction. Q Esthetics Laser Clinics in Toronto are the leading industry experts in laser hair removal technology. Large treatment areas can be addressed during each individual session, making Toronto laser hair removal cost-effective and faster than other methods.
Lasers send an energy beam through the skin that is absorbed by dark pigment (melanin) present in the shaft of the hair follicles. Because hairs naturally go through growth cycles, multiple treatments are necessary and spaced roughly 8 weeks apart, to ensure that each hair is targeted and that laser energy is received in the most effective way.
Palomar lasers are the industry gold standard that all others have been compared to, and Q Esthetics is one of the first clinics to use its advanced technology in the GTA. We have the most experienced staff and the greatest number of satisfied patients in Toronto. Different types of lasers may be used depending on the client’s needs. Palomar Nd:YAG laser was developed for hair removal on all skin types- especially for darker and tanned skin. In addition to its superior efficiency, this laser has a built-in cooling system for maximum patient safety and comfort. The Palomar StarLux 500 IPL is also one of the most efficient systems for permanent hair removal on the market. Its hand-pieces perform with increased speed and superior efficacy with patented Photon Recycling and Advanced Contact Cooling technologies.
Their different spot sizes and concentrations of power allow them to efficiently treat large areas such as the back and legs, as well as smaller areas like the chin, neck, face, underarms and bikini lines.
How does laser hair removal treatment work?
After the initial evaluation, patients will be advised which laser is most appropriate for them and what they can expect from treatments; including cost and pre/post treatment care. It is important for clients to have a realistic understanding of the length of time and total treatments required to achieve desired results. Patients will be advised to avoid tanning and sunless tanners before and after treatment. UVA/UVB sunscreens with SPF 30 are advised. No plucking or waxing should be done on the area, but shaving or depilatory creams are permitted.
Prior to laser hair removal treatment, the patient is advised to ensure the area is clean and free of lotions, deodorants and perfumes. The application of the laser feels like small rubber bands snapping on the skin, and is described most often as a minor irritation. The area will be cooled with a gel and cooling device to keep the skin comfortable, and some patients prefer to have a topical anaesthetic applied beforehand as well. All present in the treatment room will wear protective eyewear during the procedure. When the laser contacts the hair follicle, it vaporizes the root of the hair. Minor inflammation or redness may appear within a few minutes of treatment, and will resolve within a couple of hours. Ice packs may be applied if desired.
hair removal consultation
We welcome you to schedule a laser hair removal consultation, free of charge, and find out what your treatment plan will involve. Your one-on-one consultation will allow our expert technician to assess the following factors:
Skin type – pigment, skin thickness
The hair colour and thickness
If there is a tan present on the skin
Any previous and recent hair removal methods used
Past/present Accutane use
The presence of tattoos or moles in the treatment area
What can I expect during and after the treatment?
Blistering of the skin is rare after laser hair removal treatment, however if it does occur, a topical antibiotic ointment should be applied once or twice daily until healed. Clients are advised to avoid direct sun-exposure, and to use a sunblock with SPF 30 or higher, to protect recently treated skin. Patients may apply makeup immediately after treatment as this non-invasive procedure is not ablative and does not break the skin. Hairs will fall out within a few days to 1 week after treatment. In general, upwards of three separate treatment sessions will be required to ensure that all hairs have been affected at the right time in their growth cycle, and that long lasting hair reduction is achieved. Darker hairs (black, brown) tend to respond the most dramatically to laser hair removal treatments, and coarse dark hair will have a higher success rate with treatment compared to pale, fair and fine hairs – as the laser technology is designed to target hair pigment.
Considerations for laser hair removal treatments include pain, temporary swelling and redness – which usually last one to three days. In rare cases, potential blistering, herpes simplex outbreaks or infections may occur. Skin pigment irregularities for darker skin types, or patients with a recent tan, may also occur.
