Permanent Makeup Removal
Although many people are satisfied with the results of their permanent makeup, if the results are not what you had envisioned, or you grow tired of the look, you may wish to have the makeup removed. There are a number of ways to remove permanent makeup; including, chemical peeling, dermabrasion, surgical removal, laser resurfacing, as well as camouflaging (a procedure that disguises the undesirable tattoo with carefully placed micropigmentation tattoos, in skin-tone colours) – helping to restore a more natural appearance.

Laser resurfacing is the most popular procedure for permanent makeup removal. A laser emits a highly focused beam of light that passes harmlessly through the outer layer of the dermis. This light is then absorbed primarily by the pigment of permanent makeup, and quickly converts to heat. As the heat increases, the pigment breaks into tiny particles that are then eliminated by the body. Here at Q Esthetics Laser Clinic, we use the Q-Switched (Nd): YAG 1064, which is commonly considered to be the most effective laser in permanent makeup removal. While other lasers may pose a larger risk of scarring, the Q-Switched laser is able to spare the skin while at the same time destroying the pigment.

The colour of the makeup will play a role in the results, due to the varying absorption range of the pigment itself. Your skin type may also impact the results. Although the Q-Switched laser is safe to use on all skin types, pigment removal is more difficult on lighter skin. Before beginning laser resurfacing, it is important to have realistic expectations.
What challenges are posed with permanent makeup removal?
The process is similar to laser tattoo removal , which is one of the most commonly performed procedures at Q Esthetics Laser Clinic. However, because permanent makeup usually uses a modified version of tattoo ink, it can oxidize during the treatment, making it more difficult to remove. In addition, since permanent makeup is typically applied to the eyes and eyebrows, it must be removed very carefully. Laser removal in the eye area can be very difficult, and potentially dangerous. Likewise, lasers are rarely used for the removal of permanent lip liners or colour, due to the high density of blood vessels on the lips.

Protective eyewear will be worn during the treatment. No anesthetic is required, and most patients experience little discomfort during the procedure. The sensation of the pulses entering the skin is often compared to the quick snap of a rubber band. If this is something that makes you uncomfortable, we can offer a topical anesthesia.
What can I expect during and after the treatment?
The length of the procedure depends on the size of the treatment area. Often treatments are completed within ten to thirty minutes. There is no downtime following the treatment, although the treated area may be sensitive. You may experience slight swelling and the treatment area may appear whitish in colour. Swelling and whiteness will diminish approximately thirty minutes after the procedure.
Over the course of the week following your treatment, your permanent makeup will begin to fade. While you will start to see results after just one treatment, several treatments are typically required to achieve the desired result. It is recommended that you space out treatments every four to six weeks. Laser resurfacing can fade the pigment significantly, though it is not able to result in a complete removal of permanent makeup.
You may notice lightening of the skin in the area that is treated. While the Q-Switched laser has a much lower risk of scaring, there is a risk that scarring may occur. However, at Q Esthetics Laser Clinic, we use Q-Switched lasers in conjunction with other techniques to safely remove permanent makeup, which can avoid the limitations and potential side effects of the laser only approach.
