Rosacea is a common skin disorder characterized by facial redness. It may initially come and go, but can also develop as persistent redness or red lines that trace the tiny blood vessels across the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. Rosacea may sometime involve the eyes as well, and cause the sufferer to experience symptoms such as bloodshot eyes which feel irritated and gritty. Over half of Rosacea sufferers may experience eye symptoms.
Bumps, tiny pus-filled pimples, and enlarged blood vessels can also appear, giving skin a rough and uneven appearance. Rosacea symptoms and severity will vary among patients. Although rare, Rosacea symptoms may become severe enough that the skin of the nose becomes thick, swollen and bumpy; a condition referred to as Rhinophyma. This very visible condition causes nose tissue growth, as well as thick, reddened and bumpy skin, making the nose appear quite enlarged, darkened and misshapen; affecting more men than women. It is considered an extreme characteristic of Rosacea, and typically only develops if the condition is left untreated.
Facial flushing is a basic part of Rosacea, so experts believe that blood vessels may be a key source for the issue. Though the exact cause of Rosacea is still unknown, some common factors that may trigger its development include: genetic predisposition, vitamin-B deficiency, temperature change- extreme heat or cold, spicy food, alcohol, cigarettes, and concurrent skin disorders. Stress can be one of the most common Rosacea triggers.
Those who suffer from Rosacea will benefit from ensuring they get enough sleep, exercise, eat well and avoid stressful activity as much as possible.
How does laser treatment work?
Some medications can also trigger Rosacea flare ups. These include any which cause vasodilation – enlarging of the blood vessels, as well as long-term use of Cortisone. Cosmetic products which include fragrance, alcohol, or irritating ingredients can make symptoms worse and Rosacea sufferers should avoid overly drying or harsh products for their skin.
Many people mistakenly think that Rosacea is just a skin problem that will slowly go away on its own, but it may actually become worse and more visible if left untreated. Home and oral remedies, such as topical therapy and antibiotics are widely available, but it is important that you consult with a doctor before trying to treat your Rosacea at home. Your condition may be more complex than expected and you may also waste your money on ineffective products. Unfortunately, about 90% of our patients are those who have had a disappointing experience with Rosacea treatment from home remedies – they found that anti-flushing creams and oral antibiotics simply didn’t work.
