Wrinkles around the eyes and mouth are a visibly early sign of aging and wrinkle development, and fine lines and wrinkles can contribute to an aged appearance. Unfortunately, when our skin begins to age, the dead skin cells no longer exfoliate themselves efficiently. Because of this slowed cell turnover, the skin may begin to appear dull and uneven. In the top layer of the skin – the epidermis – fine lines are also prone to forming from dull and damaged skin cells.

In the dermal mid-layer of the skin, hydration and collagen become depleted which can also lead to wrinkles. The deepest, subdermal, layer is responsible for providing a plump and full foundation for our skin and fat pads. In areas like the cheeks, this fullness may begin to diminish and create a sunken look. Deep wrinkles and skin sagging are formed when the underlying structure changes and gravity pulls downward on weaker and thinner skin.
Collagen normally helps provide structure to our skin, and because collagen production diminishes as we age, without it fine lines and wrinkles settle into the thin and sagging skin. We know that collagen diminishes at the rate of 1% each year after the age of 25. Collagen and elastin are the building blocks of the skin, and their decline causes dermal tissue disorganization. When the skin structure is weakened, fine lines and wrinkles are more easily formed.
Hyaluronic acid is our skin’s natural hydrating plumper, and production is slowed as we mature; in that, skin cells are less efficient in drawing and binding water, so dehydration becomes a problem. Weaker, dehydrated skin is more prone to broken capillaries and other damage.
Circulation reduction and inefficiencies mean that less oxygen and nutrients are delivered to our skin and to the dermal layer with each year that passes, so a healthy youthful glow and colour in the lips and cheeks may diminish. There are many safe, effective and non-surgical solutions however, and Q Esthetics Laser Clinics specialize in fighting the signs of aging with you – one wrinkle at a time.
factors that may contribute to the appearance of facial wrinkles
• The natural aging process causes the skin’s connective fibers to break down. The skin gradually becomes thinner and rougher. Due to repeated movement of the underlying muscles, wrinkles form in the upper layers of skin. Squinting in the sun regularly, frowning and even smiling can gradually set in unwanted lines, making us appear older, tired or angry.
• The sun gives off ultraviolet light that damages our skin. It promotes wrinkles by penetrating through the surface of skin and damaging the underlying connective fibers. Over time, these rays can lead to facial wrinkles, sunspots, and other cosmetic problems. Research has shown that UV exposure is the reason for 80% of our skin’s aging, as well as a major contributing factor for wrinkles.
• Smoking will contribute to skin aging and wrinkling by constricting the blood vessels which carry oxygen to the skin, as well as other nutrients. Smoking causes free radical and chemical damage to the skin and is extremely dehydrating.
• Other environmental factors such as pollution, sun tanning, and wind can be responsible for the development of wrinkles.
• People with lighter skin types generally have the thinnest skin and are more frequently found with wrinkles at an earlier age. As early as the age of 25, depending on skin type and health, wrinkles may begin to form.
The appearance of some types of wrinkles can be improved with traditional treatments, such as chemical peeling and microdermabrasion, and some with our newer cosmetic solutions introduced below. Botox® Injection has become one of the most popular methods for wrinkle removal in the world. The positive effects of Botox treatment last several months*.
What can I expect during and after the treatment?
Dermal Filler Injection is another popular treatment that uses hyaluronic acid to dramatically lessen the appearance of folds and wrinkles around the mouth, such as smoker’s lines and deep nasolabial folds. Dermal fillers work as collagen replacements. When injected into the dermis, they plump up the skin to smooth its surface. Pelleve is a high radiofrequency or hRF device, and is the latest technologically advanced method of maximizing collagen stimulation under the skin’s surface, to gain visible anti-aging effects.
Introduced in the 80’s, laser-resurfacing technology has become one of the most effective treatments for wrinkle removal. Early laser wrinkle removals were often performed with a CO2 ablative laser, usually associated with downtime and side effects. But now the latest technology, fractional laser resurfacing, has become the new gold standard for laser wrinkle removal*. Our non-surgical, non-invasive and cosmetic injectable wrinkle treatments have minimal downtime associated with them and deliver dramatic results.
At Q Esthetics Laser Clinic we use the Palomar fractional laser to treat both superficial and moderate wrinkles, and Botox® and dermal filler injections to treat deep wrinkles.
